Student Profile | Magaly Garcia

Magaly Garcia, Summa Kids, Summa Children's Foundation

When Magaly Garcia was approached by the Richstone Educational Enterprise Project (REEP) and Eric Eisner, she was an eighth grade student preparing for four years in the local high school. The organization recognized Magaly's determination and academic excellence through teacher observations and test scores. Being accepted into the REEP program changed the course of Magaly's life in a very meaningful way.

As an eighth grade student, Eric met with Magaly weekly to discuss her future and interest in transferring to a private school. He also spent time with her family to ensure that they were supportive of the change in her academic environment. As a result, when Magaly was a high school freshman she entered Marymount High School rather than the local public school.

"REEP helped me so much. I was able to go to a better school that my family would never be able to afford. At Marymount High School I was challenged at a deeper level. I also could become involved in activities that weren't available at the local public school," said Magaly.

A portion of Magaly's high school tuition is supported by The Summa Children's Foundation. "It is very important for me to get monetary aid because my parents would not be able to send me to a prestigious school like Marymount High School without Summa's help," she said.

Now in eleventh grade, Magaly has become an outstanding student at Marymount High School. Her favorite classes include Calculus, Physics and Spanish. She serves as the Editor of the Features Section for the school's newspaper. She is involved with the Spanish Club and tutors other students who need help with the Spanish Language. "My incorporation to Marymount for the past three years has helped me become more aware of opportunities that life can offer."

Magaly will soon start her senior year of high school. She has already taken the SAT Prep Course and she will soon begin applying at colleges throughout California. When necessary, the REEP program will serve as a resource to help her navigate through college admissions. Once in college, she plans to study pre-med and hopes to someday become a doctor.

"Attending Marymount has allowed me to prepare for college level classes. I have also learned to be more focused on my studies," reflected Magaly. "I have been privileged and blessed to receive financial aid from The Summa Children's Foundation which facilitates my opportunities to continue onto college."
